Steel tubes and couplers are the oldest system. Tubes are cut to length and joined with couplers, which gives complete freedom of layout but needs more labour and skill. System scaffolds, such as cuplock, use ready nodes and standard parts, so they go up faster and look the same from bay to bay. Frame scaffolds, such as H frames, are quick for walls and elevations. Aluminium is the light choice for mobile work indoors.

Scaffolding pipes are the base of tube and coupler systems and of many system parts. A common size for scaffold tube is 48.3 mm outside diameter, with wall thickness chosen for the load and the life you expect. Pipes are cut to length for standards, ledgers, braces and handrails, and they are joined with couplers.
When you buy or rent pipes, ask about the length, the wall thickness, the finish and the condition. Straight, clean pipes make a neat scaffold, and bent or pitted pipes cause problems with fit and strength. We sort pipes by length and check them before dispatch, so that the count and the quality match the quote.
Adjustable steel props carry beams and slab formwork. A prop has a base, an outer tube, an inner tube and a threaded collar, so that the height can be set and fine tuned. Base jacks sit under standards and frames, spread the load on the ground and let you level the first lift. U head jacks sit at the top and cradle beams or formwork at the right level.
Shuttering plates, also called centring sheets, form the surface that shapes the concrete. They are used many times if they are cleaned and oiled after each pour. A balanced set of props, jacks and plates gives a strong, level slab, and we can supply them together for the area you have to cast.
Couplers join scaffold tubes at the right angle and in the right way. A right-angle coupler joins two tubes that cross at ninety degrees. A swivel coupler joins tubes at any angle, and is used for bracing. A sleeve coupler joins two tubes end to end to make a longer length. Putlog and board-retaining couplers hold planks or boards in place.
Couplers should be checked for cracks, worn threads and damaged bolts before use. A single poor coupler can weaken a joint, so we inspect them before dispatch and replace any doubtful piece.
Good storage extends the life of scaffolding. Keep material off the ground, under cover where you can, and sorted by type and length. Stack pipes in racks, so that they do not bend, and keep small parts in bins or boxes. Oil threads of jacks and props lightly, and keep couplers dry.
When loading and unloading, lift parts and do not drag them, and tie loads securely on vehicles. Good handling reduces damage, makes counting easy and means the material is ready for the next job.
Counting material is a skill, and good counting saves money. For a wall or facade, measure the length and the height, divide the length by the bay width, and divide the height by the lift height. For a slab, measure the plan area, divide it by the grid you plan to use, and add the jacks and beams. Add platforms for each working level and the bracing for each bay.
Always add a small allowance for the parts you will lose or bend, and recount after erection. If you share your drawing, we will total the list and send it with the quote, so that you can check the count before you decide.
